Should Sikh artefacts in British instutues be returned to India? 6/23/2009

In May 2009, a Sikh organisation in Slough wrote to the Governmenet asking for the return of Sikh artefacts in the custody of British Institutes and the Queen's private collection, among these were the supposed diaries and letters of Maharajah Duleep Singh. The return of the Golden Throne of Maharajah Ranjit Singh at the V&A is constantly in the midst of every demand that is made by Sikhs. But would these items not be better preserved here in England?

I as as a community leader, fighting for the lost Sikh Sovereignty appeal to all Sikhs around the world that we sent the message to Queen Elizabeth to return Diamond Kohinoor back to the Sikh Nation. For the British it was a mere booty but for Sikhs a national treasure. Join me in Trafalgar Square on June 13, 2010. We also must get the custody of Elveden Hall and dedicate and start there a Gurudwara"Gurudwara Sarkare Khalsa". Dr Donald Sutherland husband of Bomba Duleep Singh was the First Deann of Glancy Medical College and a fellow Aluminus. My father Dr. Pritam Singh was the fourteenth Dean. Appalling, the treatment of our King. I am outraged that the so called civilised British are the real barbarians and out and out thieves. Can you imagine the outrage that would be, if we were to take jewels from the Queen and give them to one of our Maharaja's. The English would not stand for it and all kinds of diplomatic efforts of the highest level would ensue to recover the jewels. So it begs the question why is the Indian government pottering around and treading on eggshells. The Koohinoor is ours, it was STOLEN in 1849 and then given as a gift to Queen Victoria, by the thieves that took it. On Monday 22nd February 2010 the last sentence of an article on the Life of Maharajah Duleep Singh in the Daily Express read, and I quote "the Kohi noor remains firmly part of the British Crown Jewels. What a joke and an insult I say, it was never there's to take in the first place. It would be more appropriate if it read the Kohi Noor diamond and all other artefacts including the Late King Duleep's diaries have been returned to their rightful place that they were taken from. The British government are so keen to keep hidden from the people of Punjab and indeed all of India what is righfully one of the jewels of our nation. They delibiberately took away our Kings dignity and forced him into exile. It is every Indians right to demand this injustice be put right. Our King was mistreated, and Queen Victoria is quoted as telling King Duleep's children not to pro create, so as to end the dynasty of our King. The British would not stand for this treatment of their monarch. Diplomacy is not working, maybe political sanctions should follow. Do the right thing you English people and give us back our heritage and admit what you did was wrong and APOLGISE.

why is the golden throne still under british "care" as a reminder of its once brutal imperialism. the way the prince was treated is a summary of british aristocracy. chopping up the kohinoor then embedding it in its own imperial leader's clown hat is the icing onthe cake.

All the artifacts should be returned to our great Punjab. If returned, the least punjab government can do is preserve the sikh heritage by keeping and displaying all items in a museum for the sikh generations.

These things were looted from the Punjab and should be given back and dispalyed in a Sikh Museum.
